Hangin' out.

Yesterday morning on my way to work.

Yesterday afternoon on my way home.

Wish I had nothing better to do than hang out with my friends all day. I have this sneaky suspicion they might be conspiring to head for warmer climates her pretty soon, but I'm not quite ready to talk about that one yet.

Cedar Waxwing

These are some of my favorite birds, but I've only seen a handful in my entire life.
I think they only come around when their favorite berries are ripe, then they move on.

Look What We Found!

A coworker caught this guy in a stairwell. I'm pretty sure he's a giant house spider and not his smaller, more infamous and poisonous cousin the hobo. We gave him to our boss, who was pleased to share her office with this little guy, who called the W.S.U entomology department. I assume they sent someone to come pick him up so they could play with him and teach him some tricks, or whatever they do with these guys. Who knows, they might even eat him; they've been known to do stuff like that up there.
Unfortunately I had my camera on the wrong setting so I don't have any cool up-close and personal, I can see every hair, pictures to creep, I mean, impress you with.
To give you an idea of his size, the base of that cup was at least 3 inches in diameter. I know, there are much bigger spiders in the world, but not so much around here. Considering his close appearance to the hobo, this guy's big enough for me. I think I'll stick to his smaller cousin the domestic house spider: not poisonous, not so ugly, and very effective flycatchers.

Camera Hog

This guy must've wanted his picture taken; he landed right on me.

Enthusiasm

This little bumbly bee could not seem to get enough of this dandelion.

She just dives right into her work.

Uninvited Guests

Okay, so actually they were there first. They have a way of livening up a picnic in the park. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Hmmm

It appears my cat, who's renown for her fly catching abilities (my sisters named her Venus after the Venus Fly Trap. If you ask her she'll tell you she was named after the goddess for her beauty but I wouldn't listen to a word she says), is not doing her job. I might have to see about employing a couple more spiders to pick up the slack.

Family

Snowy Tree Cricket

Found this guy hanging out on my African Violet. First I had to make sure it wasn't going to eat any of my plants, but he actually feeds on aphids and caterpillars. The nymphs, however, do eat flowers and such. Besides, crickets are supposed to be good luck.
I didn't want to use the flash because, at close range, it just washes everything out. I turned on all the lights, grabbed a flashlight to use as a spotlight, and turned the ISO on high. I probably should've used a smaller image size, because these turned out a bit grainy.
Still a pretty cool bug. He was a bit more green than these pictures show.
