Pressing My Luck

I found this just off the trail on my way home.

And, yes, it is occupied.
The Bald-Faced Hornet has a reputation for a severe lack of hospitality; they don't care much for visitors and have no qualms about making their feeling known. On the other hand, they have a sweet-tooth, a fondness for flowers. They are more than willing to inadvertently pollinate your flowers and dispose many of the little critters that like to eat your flowers.

  1. Awesome, but you are one brave soul. I really hope you were using the telephoto. The last photo is fantastic.

  2. Believe it or not, I was using my macro. Needless to say, I was a little bit nervouse. Still, with all the playing around with hornets and wasps and bees and such lately, I don't even remember the last time I was stung. It's been a couple years at least.

  3. I particularly like the way the first photo makes it look like your walk home is something straight out of "Little House on the Prairie" -- big adventures waiting just off the trail on the way home! :D You've got a lot more guts than I would with that macro.
